Attractions around the Holiday Home and Skadar Lake

Skadar Lake is the largest lake in Southern Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, a national park and under conservation.

With a size of 370 – 530 km², the lake is home to over 270 species of birds, as well as 20 endemic plant and animal species.

In addition, the region around the Skadar Lake is a wine-growing area of the best wines of Montenegro, like the renowned Vranac red wine.

Whether for culinary delicacies, scenic villages, secluded islands or historic or natural landmarks, Skadar Lake offers a lot to discover.

    Opportunities to swim in the lake and relax or sunbath on the sandy beaches depend on the weather and season of the year.

    A barbecue on the shore of the lake or lunch at one of the restaurants on the shore can be arranged if ordered upfront.

    Skadar Lake is home to 281 bird species, which is roughly 50% of the European bird species, including Pelican, cormorant, tern and heron. Because of the migratory birds, autumn and winter is the best observation time.

    The guided tour includes organization and coordination with the park authorities as well as pickup and return. The guide leads you to special places and platforms specifically set up for birdwatching at the optimal day times. Food and equipment are not included.

    Roman ruins in the size of a football field, at the outskirts of Podgorica. Nice swimming spot at the nearby river.
  • St. George Church, Podgorica

    Distance: 20 km, Google Maps
    Beautiful church from the 11th century on the hill Gorica. The surrounding park is perfect for a nice walk. A Café, as well as an adventure playground for kids are close by.
  • Zabljak Crnojevica, Skadar Lake

    Distance: 30 km, Google Maps
    Castle ruin from the 15th century and at that time residence of the Montenegrin ruler.
  • Kosmaca, Skadar Lake

    Small monastery with a hermit monk on the opposite side of the lake. Best to reach by boat.
  • Kom Monastery, Skadar Lake

    Serbian Orthodox monastery on the islet Odrinska gora in Skadar Lake. Only accessible by boat.

    The old fishing village on Skadar Lake has two different faces due to the different water levels in winter and summer. Restaurants with regional cuisine (excellent fish dishes) can be found on the lake shore. Accessible from the holiday home by car (20 min), motorboat (30 min) or by foot (90 min).
  • Karuc

    Distance: 6 km, Google Maps
    Karuc is a popular fishing village with a special charm. Old house ruins are still used as winter storage grounds by local fishermen. A castle ruin from the last Montenegrin King, Nikola Petrovic, can be discovered nearby. The village also has a good fish restaurant at the lake shore. Accessible from the holiday home by car (15 min), motorboat (60 min) or by foot (60 min).
  • Virpazar

    Small urban settlement on Skadar Lake with several restaurants (local cuisine) and points of interest. Accessible from the holiday home by car (50 min) or motorboat (120 min).
  • Godinje

    Distance: 50 km, Google Maps
    Small village dominated by traditional architecture amid unspoilt nature with a long history in wine growing. Here you can buy the best wines of Montenegro, enjoy excellent food or visit ancient ruins. Accessible from the holiday home by car (60 min) or motorboat (120 min).
  • Murici

    This picturesque fishing village has a laid-back atmosphere and is perfect for relaxing. In the shadows of the large chestnut and olive trees, there is a restaurant directly on the sea shore.   • Njegos Mausoleum

    Distance: 52 km, Google Maps
    Njegos mausoleum, built between 1970 and 1974 sits on the mountain peak Jezerski Vrh in Lovcen national park. 461 steps must be taken from the parking lot to the top, from where you can even see Kotor. Tip: Continue along the old serpentine road to Kotor from here.
  • Ostrog Monastery

    Distance: 55 km, Google Maps
    Ostrog Monastery is one of the most important monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church and probably the best-known postcard picture of Montenegro.
  • Durdevica-Tara-Bridge

    Distance: 160 km, Google Maps
    The Durdevica Tara Bridge is one of the world's most beautiful bridges of its kind. It spans the Tara river, is 350 meters long 150 meters above the narrowest point of the canyon. In addition to the breathtaking view and an interesting historical past, it offers the opportunity for zip-line and bungee jumping.
